West African Female Supergroup, Les Amazones d’Afrique, Tour Europe

Les Amazones d'Afrique - Cone Magazine

Bringing together musicians fighting for violence against women, this collective fuses an eclectic mix of generations and energies through blues, funk and dub.

Coinciding with the release of the album ‘République Amazone’ via Real World on March 10th, this west African supergroup will embark on a 8-date tour around France, Poland, Finland, Switzerland. The Panzi Foundation (Congo DRC), which has provided healing support to nearly 80,000 women (with 50,000 being victims of sexual violence) will work closely with the collective through the release, with all profits from their track ‘I Play The Kora’ going directly to financing their cause.

The track’s message is set in bringing together women singing about why they should “rise up and fight injustice because we’re all equal”. The kora, a harp-like instrument native to west Africa, works as a metaphor. Playing the kora was denied to women for years; only men were allowed the prestige.

Les Amazones d’Afrique are committed to supporting those working out in the field, helping girls and women who have suffered violence and oppression. On tour, they stand as musical ambassadors for the amazing work carried out by Panzi’s foundation in East Congo.
