Ty Segall directs new video for Candy Sam

Drag City’s staple instrumentalist, Ty Segall, has just directed and released an accompanying new video to the hallucinatory new track, Candy Sam.

Ty Segall announced his 8th studio album, Emotional Mugger, by sending a VHS tape to Pitchfork and releasing a short concept video on the website www.emotionalmugger.com. It is here that Segall and his accompanying band, the Muggers, explain the concept of emotional mugging through the wearing of baby masks and adopted pseudonyms for each band member. The record has been described as ‘guitars sliced with scribble’.

Their latest video for Candy Sam sees them following this trend, acting as a hallucinatory excursion into a non-traditional realm. The track itself, emanating the short-fused psych-rock Segall has come to be known for, could be seen as expressing themes of government dependency. Cropped imagery of infants’ faces, with particular focus on their eyes and playful expressions, juxtaposes its cynicism through their whimsical delivery. The sentiment draws comparisons with other garage-punk contemporaries like The Black Lips, who too express their political realism through the aid of fuzzy, hook-heavy compositions. Candy Sam plays on the idea of something pure turning sour – after all, never take candy from a baby, as you don’t know where it’s been or what they’ve slipped into it.

Ty Segall and The Muggers continue their European tour after an explosive performance at this year’s Primavera Sound Festival.
