JC released his debut album Portrait of a Flying Sky on Fred P’s off shoot label ‘Boards’ on 1 June.
You might not have heard of Jose Cabrera yet, but the Spanish producer has been working behind the scenes for a while now, putting out material for the likes of Fred P on his own label, A Harmless Deed, and holding down a residency at the mighty Tresor in Berlin.
For his debut, JC takes us on a deep trek through spacey techno. Sometimes psychedelic, often hypnotic, the album is a moody and mature offering from a relatively fresh-faced producer. You can tell that all his time spent immersing himself in the many-faceted world of techno has had an impact.
According to the man himself, creating the album was a cathartic experience, and it condenses all of his experience and influences to date. JC cites influences ranging from jazz, to post-punk to hip hop, although I’m not convinced I can hear them. This is an all out techno affair, featuring guest productions from Dario Zenker, Psynote and others.
Overall, an excellently produced and immersive listen.
