Sound System Culture: A Photographic Exhibition in Bristol

Sound system culture bristol on Cone Magazine

An exhibition documenting Bristol’s rich history of reggae sound systems will be presented at Colston Hall on the 13th June.

Funded by Let’s Go Yorkshire and curated by Al Newman and Mandeep Samra, the exhibition is part of a nationwide project documenting sound system culture in the UK. The exhibition began with a look at the thriving sound system culture in West Yorkshire’s Huddersfield.

For the second instalment of the exhibition, a custom-built sound system, Heritage Hifi, that was originally built for Huddersfield is going to be brought to Bristol. The exhibition will showcase the people involved in the rich history of sound system culture in Bristol, through photographs, audio recordings, archive film footage and other memorabilia. The exhibition will also coincide around the same date as the infamous St Paul’s Carnival on 4 July.
